SUMMARY:Webinar: Accelerating clean energy access in Africa by unlocking the catalysing potential of carbon finance
DESCRIPTION:Although 2023 saw record renewable energy deployment with the sector reaching a total capacity of 3\,870 GW\, growth is still unevenly distributed. Asia\, particularly China\, accounts for most of this expansion. In contrast\, Africa\, where 600 million people (43% of the population) still lack access to energy and almost a billion lack access to clean cooking\, saw a mere 4.6% increase in renewable energy capacity (reaching a total capacity of 62 GW). \n\nTo achieve SDG7 by 2030\, at least 90 million people will need to gain access to electricity\, which means tripling the current rate of connectivity. Additionally\, not only energy investment will need to double within this decade\, but given climate emergency\, we will need to ensure such investment goes towards clean and renewable energy.\nThe panel will discuss the main challenges and opportunities in designing innovative climate financial approaches to ensure that energy efficiency and renewable energy companies\, particularly those in the solar sector\, can access the vital investment needed to scale and grow to meet SDG7.\n\nIn particular\, the panellists will examine the catalytic role that carbon markets can play in accelerating the flow of climate finance and international capital into the continent and its potential to de-risk renewable energy investments more broadly. DESCRIPTION:There is a large funding gap for essential services in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The OECD estimates that $6.9 trillion a year is required up to 2030 to meet climate and SDG objectives. While there is a broad consensus among the donor community that private capital should be mobilised to help fill the funding gap\, initiatives to ‘crowd-in’ private sector capital have so far fallen short of expectations. \nStart-ups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) often struggle to access the right type of financing to achieve impact at scale. SUMMARY:Summary of the Renewables 2023 Global Status Report
DESCRIPTION:REN21 and the Climate Action Network-International (CAN) are organising a webinar to discuss the findings of the Renewables Global Status Report (GSR) series in the current geopolitical context and the direction of travel needed to achieve the shift to a renewable-based system. They will delve into the political impact of G20 decisions on renewable energy discussions during COP and other policy moments. \nThe discussion will be led by REN21 Executive Director Rana Adib and moderated by CAN's Senior Climate Science and Global Energy Policy Advisor Stephan Singer. It will be followed by a panel discussion with key speakers (to be announced soon).

SUMMARY:Demand-side Subsidies for Energy Access Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Targeting: Designing subsidies to prioritize the most vulnerable \nThe End User Subsidy Lab (EUSL)\, a joint initiative among partners ESMAP/Lighting Global\, GOGLA\, Energising Development (EnDev)\, and the Clean Cook Alliance (CCA)\, is a platform for pooling knowledge\, technical expertise\, and funding for demand-side subsidies (DSS). This webinar series organized by the EUSL will guide us through the key elements of designing demand-side subsidies programmes to facilitate the implementation of overarching energy access strategies. Each webinar will be 75 minutes with the main objective to support in-depth dialogue and discussion around lessons learned\, challenges\, and ‘how to’. \nThe first webinar focuses on how to identify people facing an affordability gap in order to effectively target subsidies for them. Key questions to be discussed include: How do we minimize the leakage of subsidies to people that can afford commercial prices? What are the best data sources for targeting DSS? What are the limitations of different targeting approaches? When is it okay to have untargeted subsidies? What are the risks of untargeted subsidies and how can they be mitigated?  This webinar\, moderated by ESMAP/Lighting Global\, will provide an overview of different targeting approaches (economic\, geographic\, demographic\, etc)\, and will showcase the experience of relevant practitioners. Guest speakers include: \n\nEnDev\, discussing experience in Malawi of leveraging the government’s social cash transfer system\nGovernment of Nepal\, represented by the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AECP)\, discussing their decade of experience targeting energy subsidies\, and in particular\, targeting vulnerable demographics\nUC Berkeley\, presenting research and application of artificial intelligence (AI) to identify most vulnerable populations in Togo under a social assistance program implemented in partnership between the World Bank and the Government of Togo
