SUMMARY:Webinar: Pre-launch of the UNIDO PURE Growth Fund
DESCRIPTION:Energy powers every link of the agri-food value chain — from irrigation and harvesting to processing\, storage and transport. By accelerating the Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) across these multiple value chains\, we can transform food systems in the Global South\, unlocking low-emission development pathways\, improving livelihoods\, increasing incomes and building resilience to the impacts climate change. \nTo drive this transformation\, the PURE Growth Fund will launch in Tanzania in May 2025. The fund will support clean energy SMEs and agribusinesses to scale up through a multi-dimensional approach combining incentive capital\, technical assistance and fostering an enabling environment for PURE technologies to achieve greater integration within food systems. \nWe invite you to join REEEP and guest speakers from GOGLA and the Tanzania Horticulture Association (TAHA) for our pre-launch Webinar featuring: \n\nan overview of the PURE Growth Fund and Q&A\ninsight on how expanding renewable energy in agriculture can strengthen agri-food value chains and benefit local populations\nthe need for programmes and initiatives at the energy-agriculture nexus to support SMEs to foster sustainable market development

SUMMARY:Webinar: Building gender-inclusive PURE business models
DESCRIPTION:Women are essential yet often invisible drivers of economic activity across developing regions\, comprising 40% of the global agricultural workforce and 58% of Africa's self-employed population. Despite their significant contributions\, women face persistent barriers in accessing and benefiting from Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) technologies. \nJoin GOGLA for an insightful webinar to discover how innovative companies are transforming their business models to better serve women's energy needs while building sustainable businesses. \nIn this webinar\, you'll understand why women represent only one-third of PURE technology end-users despite their economic significance\, along with the transformative impact when this gap is addressed. We'll explore how customer personas serve as powerful tools for developing gender-smart business models by mapping women's unique needs\, constraints\, and aspirations across different segments—from subsistence farmers to growth-oriented entrepreneurs. This user-centered approach helps companies identify critical pain points and opportunities throughout the customer journey\, informing everything from product design to marketing strategies and support services. \nDrawing on existing literature and real-world examples of gender-smart approaches that work\, including Oorja's "Farming as a Service" and Agsol's women-friendly solar mills designed for lightweight operation and small batch processing\, this webinar will present a framework for creating gender-smart businesses across the entire customer journey. The speakers will also discuss ecosystem support by exploring policy recommendations and partnerships needed to scale these approaches. This webinar offers practical insights for anyone interested in closing the gender gap in energy access while tapping into a significant underserved market. \n  \n  \nSpeakers\n\n\n\nNisha Singh \nSenior Gender and Financial Inclusion Specialist·Distill Inclusion \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWilleke Westra \nPartnerships Manager·Agsol \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSejal Agarwal \nImpact Manager·Oorja Solutions \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrenda Marbaniang \nPolicy Manager·GOGLA

SUMMARY:AECE2-ESMAP webinar on Energy for Jobs
DESCRIPTION:Join this webinar hosted by the World Bank’s Kenya Country Office and ESMAP on opportunities for creation of sustainable jobs in Eastern and Southern Africa (AFE) . They will explore the opportunities and challenges in accelerating access to energy\, expanding economic opportunities and creating sustainable jobs in the agriculture and livestock sectors. \n \nThis webinar brings together agriculture and energy practitioners to explore how to unlock transformation in the Agri-food systems. Agriculture accounts for 56 percent of total employment in Eastern and Southern Africa (AFE). Improving productivity in agriculture\, livestock\, and fisheries\, and supporting approaches that allow smallholder farmers\, livestock producers\, and fish producers to move up the value chains is critical. However\, the lack of reliable energy access in these rural areas presents a major barrier to economic activity and job creation\, and to the expansion of benefits to smallholder farmers. In these rural areas\, accelerated access to energy needed to achieve economic growth and job creation can only happen through distributed renewable energy (DRE) solutions\, such as solar home systems\, micro-grids\, and mini-grids. \nDuring this webinar\, you will learn firsthand from practitioners about distributed renewable energy (DRE) solutions\, how DRE facilitates higher productivity in agriculture and livestock value chains\, and how it enables sustainable job creation. We will hear about experiences to accelerate the expansion of access to energy in AFE\, South Asia and beyond. We will discuss what has worked\, what has not\, and how successful approaches can be replicated and scaled up. \nThe event will be chaired by Qimiao Fan\, Division Director for Kenya\, Rwanda\, Somalia\, and Uganda at the World Bank. The presentation will be given by Dana Rysankova\, Lead Energy Specialist at the World Bank. Closing remarks will be delivered by Fanny Missfeldt-Ringius\, Practice Manager at ESMAP\, World Bank. The panelists include: \n- Kasozí Tondo James\, Principal Engineer at the Ministry of Agriculture\, Animal Industry and Fisheries\, Uganda \n- Amanullah Alamzai\, Senior Agriculture Economist at the World Bank \n- Bas Hetterschied\, Manager Partnerships at Wageningen University & Research (WUR)

SUMMARY:Webinar: Accelerating clean energy access in Africa by unlocking the catalysing potential of carbon finance
DESCRIPTION:Although 2023 saw record renewable energy deployment with the sector reaching a total capacity of 3\,870 GW\, growth is still unevenly distributed. Asia\, particularly China\, accounts for most of this expansion. In contrast\, Africa\, where 600 million people (43% of the population) still lack access to energy and almost a billion lack access to clean cooking\, saw a mere 4.6% increase in renewable energy capacity (reaching a total capacity of 62 GW). \n\nTo achieve SDG7 by 2030\, at least 90 million people will need to gain access to electricity\, which means tripling the current rate of connectivity. Additionally\, not only energy investment will need to double within this decade\, but given climate emergency\, we will need to ensure such investment goes towards clean and renewable energy.\nThe panel will discuss the main challenges and opportunities in designing innovative climate financial approaches to ensure that energy efficiency and renewable energy companies\, particularly those in the solar sector\, can access the vital investment needed to scale and grow to meet SDG7.\n\nIn particular\, the panellists will examine the catalytic role that carbon markets can play in accelerating the flow of climate finance and international capital into the continent and its potential to de-risk renewable energy investments more broadly. This could open up new sustainable economic opportunities to the African continent\, and on some cases even promote the development of new sectors in the continent such as the export of green hydrogen\, given the abundant renewable energy resources that exist in the region.\n\n\n\n\nModerator: Susie Wheeldon\, Head of Communications\, GOGLA \n\nPanellists:\n\n\nRosalie Marsden\, Senior Associate\, Acumen \nWilliam Brent\, CMO\, Husk Power Systems (Minigrids - Nigeria)\nDennis Nderitu\, Energy Systems Manager\, Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet\nPablo Fernandez\, CEO\, ecosecurities

SUMMARY:GSMA webinar - Digitalising Innovative Finance: Carbon credits and results-based financing
DESCRIPTION:There is a large funding gap for essential services in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The OECD estimates that $6.9 trillion a year is required up to 2030 to meet climate and SDG objectives. While there is a broad consensus among the donor community that private capital should be mobilised to help fill the funding gap\, initiatives to ‘crowd-in’ private sector capital have so far fallen short of expectations. \nStart-ups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) often struggle to access the right type of financing to achieve impact at scale. This is common in sectors that face regulatory risks such as utility services\, asset-heavy models (e.g. e-mobility\, energy or productive use equipment) or services targeting low-income customers (e.g. clean cooking\, water\, sanitation and hygiene\, or off-grid solar). \nThe GSMA Digital Utilities programme and Mondato Insights recently published a report on the role of digital technology in enabling access to innovative financing instruments to early-stage start-ups\, SMEs\, and service providers in LMICs. \nIn our two-part webinar series on the report\, we are focusing on some of the financing instruments that were covered\, and invite key experts and practitioners to share their perspectives. \nThis first webinar focusses on the role of digital technology in making access to results-based financing and carbon credits more efficient\, transparent and catalytic. \nWe will be joined by a great group of speakers from start-ups\, the private sector and enabling organisations that are directly involved in leveraging digital tools for significant results-based financing (RBF) and carbon credit programmes. \nSpeakers:\n- Zach White\, Senior Insights Manager\, GSMA Digital Utilities\n- Samuel Miles\, Consultant\, Mondato Insights & Chancellor's Fellow UC Berkeley\n- George Kibala Bauer\, Director\, GSMA Digital Utiltiies\n- Susan Smith\, VP Finance Solutions - Public Sector\, Odyssey\n- Stefan Zelazny\, Managing Director\, Access to Energy Institute\n- Kyle Hamilton\, Senior Manager - Strategy and Partnerships\, Nuru\n- Ben Jeffreys\, CEO\, ATEC\n- Daniel Kammen\, James and Katherine Lau Distinguished Professor of Sustainability\, University of California Berkeley

The network will create visibility\, networking\, and knowledge-sharing opportunities for EEP Africa alumni. \nEEP Africa provides risk tolerant early-stage grant financing for locally driven innovative clean projects\, technologies\, and business models through a competitive call for proposals process. Project financing is supplemented by technical support\, investment facilitation\, and knowledge sharing. \n\n\nSpeakers: Jussi Viding\, EEP Africa Fund Manager\, and Susanne Hounsell\, EEP Africa Head of Portfolio \nRegister now >> \n\n  \n\nUnlocking Carbon Finance for Smaller Energy Businesses \nThursday\, 8 February at 14:00 - 15:30 GMT+2 \nThe voluntary carbon market presents an opportunity for renewable energy companies to access additional revenue streams and expand their reach. Despite the opportunity\, the African carbon credits market has significant scope for growth\, having attained only 2% of its full potential to date. The development of the carbon credits market in Africa is primarily hindered by market-related challenges. Small businesses especially face disadvantages that restrict their direct access to the carbon credit market. These include high associated costs\, required scale\, and a lengthy and cumbersome accreditation process. However\, innovative approaches are emerging which address these barriers. \nJoin to hear about several cost-effective and innovative solutions emerging within the carbon credits market\, catering to the needs of smaller businesses. \n\n\n\nModerator: Karlijn Groen\, EEP Africa Portfolio Manager \nSpeakers: Ryan Ombara\, Open Capital Advisors; Nikki Carenza\, 4R Digital; Dennis Owino Onono\, South Pole; Madrin Maina\, Sistema.bio; more speakers to be confirmed. \nRegister now >>

SUMMARY:Demand-side subsidies webinar 4: Exit strategy approaches for subsidy programmes
DESCRIPTION:The fourth webinar in the Demand-side Subsidies for Energy Access Webinar Series focuses on exit strategy approaches within the context of energy access subsidies. While universal access may require ongoing subsidies\, an exit strategy should be integrated into program design. \nThis webinar\, moderated by GOGLA\, will engage in discussions on designing an exit strategy that aligns with the project's overarching goals for long-term access. Furthermore\, we will examine the feasibility of phasing out subsidies once the target is met\, exploring the availability of adequate funds to fulfil this objective or assessing the potential need for recurrent subsidies.

SUMMARY:Power for All webinar: Boosting East Africa's agrifood systems through renewable energy
DESCRIPTION:The upcoming webinar 'Empowering Smallholder Farmers: Boosting Agricultural Productivity Through Distributed Renewable Energy Policies to Attract Private Sector Investment'\, is the next feature in Power for All’s Agriculture Webinar series. This session will focus on how alignment on policy\, regulation\, and finance can expand distributed renewable energy (DRE) and practically benefit East Africa's agricultural sector. The session will see leading policymakers from Kenya\, Uganda\, and Ethiopia\, discussing the vital policy and investment strategies needed to evolve food systems and mitigate their climate impact. \nRepresenting over 80% of global farmers and producing nearly a third of the world’s food\, smallholder farmers are vital to global food systems\, especially in the Global South. The agricultural sector\, heavily reliant on fossil fuels\, accounts for over 30% of global emissions. Facing strained food systems and a major role in climate change\, urgent action is needed to meet the expected 60% increase in food demand by 2050 and avert a major global crisis. \nThe Global South\, contributing least to the food-climate crisis\, faces its severest impacts. This disparity threatens food systems in sub-Saharan Africa\, complicating efforts to satisfy the growing population's food needs. \nThe Webinar will feature key policymakers in Kenya\, Uganda\, and Ethiopia\, discussing how encouraging strategic renewable energy investments can transform agriculture into a catalyst for climate resilience. \nPower for All's recent research reveals that transitioning just five key farming technologies to renewable energy for Africa's smallholder farmers can cut emissions by 10% and significantly elevate the continent's economy by $24.5 billion. \nPanelists \n\nHizkyas Dufera\, Senior Advisor\, Ministry of Irrigation and Lowlands\, Govt. of Ethiopia\nDan K Marangu\, Director of Renewable Energy\, Ministry of Energy\, Govt. of Kenya\nDominic Banaga Mucunguzi : Principal Engineer\, Irrigation and Drainage\, Ministry of Agriculture\, Animal Industry and Fisheries\, Govt of Uganda\n\nSession Moderated by Brian Kawuma\, Powering Agriculture Director\, Power for All
