SUMMARY:COP side event: Enhancing Climate Resilience in agri-food value chains through Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE)
DESCRIPTION:With the increasing impacts of climate change\, there is a critical need to enhance resilience across agri-food value chains\, especially in vulnerable regions that rely on agriculture for livelihoods and food security. REEEP and GOGLA are hosting a session aligning with COP29’s emphasis on climate adaptation and resilience\, focusing on how distributed renewable energy can serve as a catalyst for sustainable\, climate-smart agriculture. It seeks to demonstrate how productive use of renewable energy (PURE) solutions can maximize productivity\, reduce food waste and emissions and foster resilience in agriculture against climate shocks\, crucial for global food security and achieving NDC goals. \nAgriculture is among the most climate-sensitive sectors\, leaving rural communities especially vulnerable to climate shocks. Solar off-grid electricity and productive use technologies are essential for modernizing agriculture\, fostering green growth\, and enhancing food security in rural off-grid areas. By integrating distributed renewable energy solutions\, the sector can reduce its dependence on fossil fuels\, cut operational costs and increase productivity sustainably\, enabling irrigation\, processing and preservation. \nSolar irrigation systems are reducing reliance on rain-fed agricultural production and can provide a sustainable way to increase food production. For example\, research by 60 Decibels on solar water pump users in Kenya\, Rwanda\, Senegal\, Tanzania\, Uganda and Zambia found that 65% reported a significant increase in productivity\, while an additional 31% noted a moderate increase. Refrigeration units\, walk-in cold rooms\, and other cold storage facilities support food preservation. In India\, EcoZen has developed over 850 cold storage units\, benefiting more than 70\,000 farmers\, and has enhanced these solutions with its EcoConnect platform\, which connects farmers directly to markets. Solar-powered agro-processing solutions like solar mills and solar dryers can also enhance food security\, reduce post-harvest losses and create employment. \nWhen these PURE solutions are complemented with increased knowledge of improved agricultural practices\,  market linkages\, and the right policy environment\, they can improve economic opportunities for the most climate vulnerable population. This transition to renewables in agri-food value chains not only mitigates climate impact but also enhances community resilience\, directly supporting the broader climate adaptation agenda. \n  \nSession Objectives: \n\nExplore how PURE technologies and solutions contribute to a resilient\, low-emission and high-value agri-food sector\nDiscuss ongoing interventions to tackle barriers to adoption and access for different actors\nShowcase practical end-user centric examples from agriculture and energy experiences\nEmphasise the need for innovative financial and delivery models for farmers\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\nJames Smith\nDirector of Strategy and Development\nREEEP\n\n\n\n\n\nPatrick Tonui\nHead of Policy and Regional Strategy\nGOGLA

SUMMARY:COP side event - Beyond Blending: Climate finance for clean energy and adaptation businesses in developing countries
DESCRIPTION:The developing world faces a pressing challenge: driving climate action while ensuring universal energy access and economic growth. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are critical to this effort\, yet they are often held back by complex financial barriers. As the world prepares for the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance and pushes to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030\, the need for practical\, scalable financial solutions is more urgent than ever. \nSMEs leading clean energy and adaptation projects are confronted with significant risks and limited access to finance. Early-stage funding is scarce\, and private equity and debt options often come with high costs and restrictive terms. Catalytic capital\, which mitigates risk and provides early-stage support\, offers a direct path to overcoming these hurdles. By focusing on actionable solutions\, this session will examine where catalytic capital is working\, where it’s falling short\, and how we can scale finance to accelerate climate action. \nThe event\, hosted by REEEP\, Acumen\, the Council on Energy\, Environment and Water (CEEW) and the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) \, will deliver key takeaways on effective financial mechanisms. It will begin with a framing fireside chat featuring a leading energy entrepreneur\, offering a real-world example of overcoming financial barriers. An expert panel of finance leaders\, government representatives\, and energy innovators will then share success stories and pinpoint gaps\, offering tangible solutions to scale clean energy in developing markets. \nAttendees will leave with practical insights into how blended finance\, credit guarantees and concessional loans are unlocking private investment. The discussion will focus on where and why these tools are succeeding and\, more importantly\, how we can replicate and expand these models to create jobs\, improve energy access and cut emissions across the Global South.

SUMMARY:COP28 side event: Innovative renewable solutions in agriculture
DESCRIPTION:The session aims to address the critical issues surrounding the heavy dependence on imported and volatile fossil fuels within global agri-food systems\, particularly focusing on developing countries’ agriculture sector. With fossil fuels accounting for a significant portion of energy consumption in food systems\, resulting in high greenhouse gas emissions\, there is a pressing need to transition towards renewable energy solutions. \nThe event will explore the transformative potential of renewable energy in powering the agriculture sector and fostering a low-emission\, climate-resilient food system. Its primary objectives include promoting the adoption of productive use of renewable energy (PURE) technologies to modernize agriculture\, enhance food and water security\, empower micro\, small\, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs)\, and electrify the supporting infrastructure (e.g. storage\, transport). \nAdditionally\, it seeks to identify and address barriers to PURE technology adoption\, engage global stakeholders to emphasize the need for increased financing and improved policies\, and ignite transformative dialogues about renewable energy's potential to achieve sustainable development goals. Finally\, the session will attract financial institutions' focus on the essential channeling of sustainable finance toward agri-food systems
